13 Grazie al sostegno morale della sorella Maria e del fratello Giovanni, Bottecchia inizia positivamente il 1927 vincendo alcune gare minori. Il 22 Maggio però viene informato della tragica morte dell’amato fratello, investito da un’auto a Vittorio Veneto mentre tornava a casa in bicicletta. Rientrato in Italia, pochi giorni dopo, precisamente il 3 giugno 1927, Ottavio viene ritrovato in fin di vita con una ferita alla testa lungo una strada di Trasaghis, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Trasportato in spalla fino alla prima locanda, viene riconosciuto dal parroco che gli dà l’estrema unzione. Successivamente viene caricato su un carro e trasportato d’urgenza all’ospedale di Gemona. Il 15 giugno 1927, dopo giorni di agonia, Ottavio viene a mancare. Ai tre riti funebri per il grande campione, svoltisi a Gemona, Pordenone e Colle Umberto, si fa notare l’assenza di politici e grandi ciclisti italiani ma a nessuno sfugge la partecipazione del più grande avversario: Henri Pélissier. Quest’ultimo infatti accompagna il feretro lungo la salita del Calvario che lo porta al cimitero di San Martino di Colle Umberto. LA TRAGICA SCOMPARSA Thanks to the moral support of his sister Maria and brother Giovanni, Bottecchia starts 1927 positively by winning some minor races. On 22nd May, however, he is informed of the tragic death of his beloved brother, hit by a car in Vittorio Veneto while returning home by bicycle. Returning to Italy, a few days later, precisely on 3rd June 1927, Ottavio is found almost dead with a head wound along a road in Trasaghis, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Carried over the shoulder to the first inn, he is recognized by the parish priest who gives him the last rites. He is then loaded onto a cart and taken to the hospital in Gemona. On 15th June 1927, after days of agony, Ottavio passed away. At the three funerasl for the great champion, held in Gemona, Pordenone and Colle Umberto the absence of politicians and great Italian cyclists was conspicuous, but everyone noticed the presence of his greatest opponent: Henri Pélissier. The latter in fact accompanied the coffin up the Calvary that leads him to the cemetery of San Martino di Colle Umberto. De retour en Italie, quelques jours plus tard, précisément le 3 juin 1927, Ottavio est retrouvé mourant avec une blessure à la tête le long d’une route de Trasaghis, dans le Frioul-Vénétie Julienne. Transporté sur le dos jusqu’à la première auberge, il est reconnu par le curé qui lui donne l’extrême onction. Il est ensuite chargé sur un chariot et transporté d’urgence à l’hôpital de Gemona. Le 15 juin 1927, après des jours d’agonie, Ottavio meurt. Aux trois rites funèbres du grand champion on remarque l’absence de politiciens et grands cyclistes italiens mais àpersonne n’échappe la participation de son plus grand adversaire : Henri Pélissier.
